Summer Reading Programs
Athens City School librarians want to give students a chance to continue their good reading habits and ensure that they begin the new school year with a literacy advantage. The summer reading schedule allows each elementary and intermediate school library in the district to open one day a week from 9 a.m. -11 a.m during the months of June and July. Parents are required to stay with their child. This allows parents to visit their child’s and other school libraries in the district and become more familiar with available resources. They also want parents to realize that school libraries are more important than ever in this digital age.
Beginning June 14, students may visit any ACS elementary school library or Athens Intermediate School and take Accelerated Reader (AR) tests on books they read. Most students who participate in AR throughout the school year and work toward goals every nine weeks.
In addition to the intrinsic rewards of reading, when students read during the summer, these goals as well as outside reading assignments are much easier to complete when school begins in the fall. This motivates and encourages more reading throughout the year. The purpose of this is to encourage summer reading and provide ways for students to get a jump start on the next school year. Most ACS schools have a recommended reading program. Students may also begin completing these requirements during the summer months for the upcoming year.
“Athens City Schools is deeply committed to literacy. Above all, we want our students to enjoy reading and acquire the overall benefits associated with it. By opening our libraries in the summer, we hope to set the stage for success in the fall.” – Carla Daws, librarian
More information about recommended reading for each school may be found at each ACS website.

Kindergarten Camp at Julian Newman
Dates: July 10,11,12 and July 17, 18, 19
Breakfast and lunch are provided
Julian Newman Kindergarten Camp is a great opportunity for our youngest students to get to know their new school before the hustle and bustle of the new year begins. They are introduced to the classrooms, teachers, hallways, library and more. “Just like adults, we are all more comfortable if we have experienced something before, if only for a short time. The fear of the unknown can create unnecessary anxiety,” said Sharla Birdsong, principal. “This soft introduction makes the transition to kindergarten in the fall smoother for the students while giving them a sense of confidence about the new adventure they’re about to embark upon.”
Registration forms will be mailed to those who have registered through Schoolmint. This camp is only available to Julian Newman students who are eligible for kindergarten.
